試し酒（ためしざけ） Tameshi-zake – The Trial of Five Shō

一．ある夜の江戸 1. An Evening in Edo

時は江戸のころ。店じまいをすませた大店（おおだな）の旦那が、奥の座敷で古くからの友人と酒を酌み交わしていました。 行灯の灯りはやわらかく、徳利と盃が静かに光っています。

何杯か飲んで、いい気分になってきた頃――友人がふと盃を置いて言います。

「旦那、この世には、とんでもなく酒の強い男がいるもんでしてね」

「ほう、どれくらい強いんだ」

「五升ですよ、五升！」
「馬鹿を言うな、人間が五升も飲めるか」

In the days of Edo, a wealthy merchant had finished business for the day and was sharing sake with an old friend in a quiet tatami room at the back of his shop. The soft light of an oil lamp flickered, and a tokkuri flask and small cups shone on the low table.

After a few rounds, pleasantly drunk, the friend suddenly set down his cup and said:

“Sir, there’s a man in this town who can drink an unbelievable amount of sake.”

“Oh? How much can he drink?”

“Five shō!” he declared.
“Nonsense,” the merchant replied. “No human can drink five shō.”

二．五升の賭け 2. The Wager of Five Shō

友人は引き下がりません。 「いやいや、ほんとうに飲むんです。私、この目で見ました」

酔いも手伝って、言い合いはだんだん熱を帯びていきます。

「いいか、そんな男がいるものか」
「いますって」
「いるなら連れてこい。五升飲んだら、金五百両くれてやろう！」

五百両といえば、一生ものの大金です。友人は目を丸くして、念を押します。

「本当に五百両、くださるんですね？」
「嘘をついてどうする。飲めば五百両、飲めなきゃどうする？」

The friend would not back down.
“No, I swear it’s true. I saw him with my own eyes.”

Fueled by sake, the argument grew more heated.

“There can’t be such a man.”
“There is!”
“Fine. Bring him here. If he drinks five shō in front of me, I’ll give him five hundred ryō!”

Five hundred ryō was a fortune—enough to change a person’s life. The friend blinked in surprise and asked:

“You truly mean five hundred ryō?”
“I never break my word. If he drinks it, he gets it. If not—well, that’s another story.”

三．酒豪、現る 3. The Strong Drinker Appears

友人は、さっそく例の男を呼びに出ていきます。 しばらくして連れてこられたのは、どこにでもいそうな若い男でした。

「お前が、その酒の強い男か」
「はい、まあ、多少は…」

旦那は目の前に大きな徳利を並べ、言い渡します。

「五升飲めたら五百両だ。飲めるか」
「五百両！？ ……飲みます！」

The friend hurried out to fetch the man. After a short while, he returned with a young fellow who looked entirely ordinary.

“So, you’re the one who can drink all that sake?” the merchant asked.
“Yes, sir… I can drink a fair amount,” the man replied, a bit shyly.

Large jars and flasks of sake were placed in front of him.

“If you drink five shō, you will receive five hundred ryō. Can you do it?”
“Five hundred ryō…? Yes, sir. I’ll drink it!”

四．五升の試し酒 4. The Trial of Five Shō

若い男は、ぐい、と盃をあおります。一升、二升、と不思議なほどの早さで飲み干していきます。

「旦那、もう二升いきましたよ」
「なに、もう二升！」

三升、四升……さすがに顔が赤くなり、動きもゆっくりになってきましたが、それでも手は止まりません。

とうとう、最後の一杯を手に取り、力をふりしぼって飲み干しました。
「……飲みました」

「本当に五升飲みおった！」
旦那は驚きながらも、約束どおり五百両を差し出します。

The young man raised his cup and began to drink. One shō, then a second—he emptied them at an astonishing pace.

“Sir, he’s already finished two shō,” the friend whispered.
“Two already? Impossible…” the merchant muttered, eyes widening.

Three shō… four shō… His face flushed red, his movements slowed, but he did not stop.

At last, he lifted the final cup of the fifth shō, gathered his strength, and drained it to the last drop.
“…I’ve finished,” he said quietly.

“He truly drank all five shō!” cried the merchant. Astonished but true to his word, he handed over the purse of five hundred ryō.

五．オチ ― 「稽古」の正体 5. The Punchline – The “Practice”

若い男は、にこにこと五百両を懐にしまいます。 そこで旦那がふと気になって、たずねました。

「お前、ふだんからこんなに飲むのか」
「いえ、そんなには飲みません」

「じゃあ、どうして今日は五升も飲めた」
「へえ、それがですね――」

「五百両くださるっていうんで、さっき酒屋で“稽古”してきたんで」

「稽古？ どうやって」
「一升飲んで寝て、一升飲んで寝て……五回くり返しました」

「それを稽古とは言わん！ ただの酔っぱらいの昼寝だ！」
座敷は大笑いになり、そこでおしまい――これが「試し酒」のオチです。

The young man happily tucked the money into his robe. Curious, the merchant asked:

“Do you usually drink this much?”
“Oh no, sir. Not at all,” the man replied.

“Then how did you manage to drink five shō today?”
“Well…” he said, scratching his head.

“Since you promised five hundred ryō, I went to a sake shop earlier and practiced.”

“Practiced? How?”
“I drank one shō, took a nap, drank another shō, took a nap… I repeated that five times.”

“That’s not practice!” cried the merchant. “That’s just a drunkard taking naps!”

The room burst into laughter. And with that punchline, the story of “Tameshi-zake” comes to a close.

六．この噺に流れる「日本酒らしさ」 6. The Spirit of Sake in This Story

「試し酒」は、酒の強さそのものを競う噺というよりも、 「約束」「見栄」「ちょっとしたずるさ」といった、人間らしい可笑しさを描いた噺です。 酒は、その人間味を引き出す「きっかけ」として登場します。

日本酒は、ただ度数の強さを誇る飲み物ではなく、 人と人とのあいだに会話や笑いを生み出してきた存在でした。 そうした江戸の酒文化の一端が、この落語の中にも息づいています。

“Tameshi-zake” is not merely about showing off how much someone can drink. It gently portrays human traits—keeping one’s word, pride, a touch of foolishness and cunning— with sake as the catalyst that brings these qualities to the surface.

Sake in Japan has never been just about alcohol content. It has long been something that creates conversation, laughter, and connection between people. This story is one small window into that warm sake culture of Edo.
